01 / Visual direction

The problem

A picker needs to identify the item quickly and understand what to do when stock is limited. Order progress should stay visible without obscuring the current item and allowed substitution.

The direction

Cartwell combines a compact mobile order with food thumbnails, scan controls and a specific oat-milk alternative note.

Inside the product

  1. Find the next item

Photographs and quantity details distinguish bananas, spinach and oat milk.

  2. Spot the exception

A low-stock row uses a different state while retaining the list’s normal alignment.

  3. Use the allowed alternative

The substitution note explains the customer’s preference before picking continues.

Design decisions

Imagery belongs inside the task

Food thumbnails help identify the physical item rather than simply decorating the screen.

Strong brand, clear controls

Berry and lime establish a distinct identity while scan actions remain visually consistent.

What we would validate next

Validate barcode matching, live store stock, substitution consent and order-state updates with pickers and fulfillment managers.

This is an independent design exploration. The screens use illustrative brands and records; they describe a proposed experience.
